Current Events

This week for writing we learning about PIE, P is for persuade, I is for inform and E is for entertainment and we looked at some news articles that were happening in NZ. We created a Google Map showing where the article took place. We were supposed to find articles that relate to Timeliness which means that is happening right now, Relevance which means a story that happened nearby or is concern to the local in interest, Magnitude which means A story that is great in size of number or a lot of people died, Unexpectedness means something unusual, or something that occurs without any warning, Impact means news that will affect a large number of readers. Reference to someone famous or important means a news about the prominent person, Oddity means a unique situation, Conflict which means a major struggle in the news, Reference to something negative means the bad news sells more than good news, Continuity means a continuation of a story that has been in the news. Emotions means emotions such as jealousy, love or hate, increase interest in a story and progress which means new hope or new improvements. I had a lot of fun doing this and while doing this I learned what is happening around me.

Should NZ Ban Plastic Straws?

Yes I think we should ban plastic straws. Think about it would you want to see a turtle with plastic straw stuck in their nose or a dead bird with plastic straws in their mouth? well I wouldn't. Hey I am Nidhi and today I will be giving my opinion on if we should ban plastic straws.

I have had enough of people going on about why we should not ban plastic straws, yes plastic straws are easier to use but while using them have you ever thought about the animals that suffer due to plastic straws?. Straws break down to micro plastic which is tiny bits of plastic that float around in the ocean causing harm to the sea animals.

I think people should buy one of the metal straws and carry it around in their bag. Plastic straws take more than 200 years to decompose and they can be replaced by paper, bamboo or metal straws. Paper straws decompose easily and metal and bamboo straws can be used numerous times, we don't need to throw them away and they don't harm the environment.

In the last ten years more than 65,000 plastic straws have been collected from NZ beaches during coastal clean ups. 65,000 is a huge number, imagine seeing that many straws on your favourite beach. Some of the straw that weren't picked up might have ended up in turtles nostrils.

I would stop using plastic straws and think about how it harms the animals and the environment. Would you do the same? Would you want the animals and the wildlife being harmed just because of plastic straws.

Kiwi Can

This terms topic for Kiwi Can is Integrity. Integrity means doing the right thing or owning up to your mistakes. For example at Kiwi can we did a role play explaining Integrity. We had two shopkeepers and a group of girls who went to buy some things from the dairy gave the shop keeper a $20 note and the shopkeeper gave the girls $20 back. The girls decided to go and tell the shopkeepers that they gave them the wrong change. That way the girls showed Integrity by being honest and owning up. I found it interesting learning the meaning of Integrity. The photo of our role play shows that is important to show Integrity when the shopkeepers give you the wrong change. By being honest and returning it you are showing this quality.
